What I hold dear.

Melly here.

Thinking about the words Highly Prized, I ask myself? What do I value? What are the prized aspects of my life. I started several pages, when I realized it is simple.  My husband, my cat, the time to make art, play with paint, draw.

Arrow is my best feline friend. He is 17 years old. In the last few years I have watched the shape of his body whittle down, to become concentrated.  I will not be able to hold, stroke or commune with Arrow forever and that makes every moment even more dear. There is not a day when Arrow and I do not cuddle, make lap and enjoy one another. He has begun to really speak to me. He loves Greenies, a hard crunchy treat, I know his Greenie meout. He lets me know when he is hungry. He lets me know he loves me and I love him back.

  2. I have a kitty piece in the works of one of my around 15-ish kitties. He seeks out the warm places to nap and seldom goes outside anymore. He might like Arrow's Greenies, too. Beautiful page for a lovely kitty.

  3. Have 2 cats...one is the 'godfather' and lets the other do the speaking for him. All we get from Carroll is "now" "now" - it's feeding time.

Keeping up with my end of the challenge...

  4. I am working on a page to enter on the site, but I would love to be able to put my kitties on here also, but can't seem to draw them the way you did. They are by far my most loved pets, so I can relate to your post. Thanks for sharing. Cindy

  6. I, too, have a 17-year-old kitty. He gets anything he wants to eat because I'm obsessed with keeping as much weight on him as possible. He knows this and uses it to every possible advantage, demanding wet food at the most inopportune moments -- and getting it. Loved meeting your baby, Melly.

  8. I lost my Emma at 16 last Jan. I have been trying to develop a sketch to encompass all my kitties, the ones who are gone and the one who remains. You are right to cuddle as much as you can and give him treats. I wish I could sketch as beautiful a tribute as you have done.

  9. What is it about artists and cats? Do we see them as objects d'art, along with their loving ways? Love, love, love this sketch! My kitties are 14, 15, and 16 and I need to sketch their precious selves!

  10. This is crazy Melly, but I had a black cat that I named Arrow (after Oblio and Arrow) - many moons ago. He was the neatest cat. I deeply love this sketch..it holds such special meaning about the bond between us and our critters - they give us such unconditional love.

  12. Melly, thank you for sharing this lovely drawing and description of your beloved Arrow. I lost my darling Max just before Xmas at the still young age of 13. Our last days together were extra special, so I can relate to how much you are cherishing these moments cuddling with Arrow. (Might I also suggest taking videos if you can? I didn't think of it before and wish I had.) Our furry companions definitely are "highly prized".

  13. I know how you feel about Arrow. My Abby is 16 years old and it scares me to think of the day when she will be gone. I treasure all the cuddling and purring I can get! What a beautiful sketch.

  15. Beautiful! Such a soft, lovely piece. I have a kitty the exact same age and coloring as your Arrow! Mine is a noisy, demanding old lady, very insistent on her feeding times! :)

Here is another animal I love in my latest Highly Prized sketch offering:

  16. Lovely post. I lost two very aged black cats last year, 17 and 18 years old. Your words are very moving. And I love your art.

  17. Thanks everyone! Arrow sleep snug on my lap as I write. He is sometimes loud like a bellows, sometimes soft and harumphing. he is always a very ernest and sincere cat. All cats are so special in their own way.
