Fruits & Veggies: Our Sketchbook Challenge for May

Leslie here with the new theme for May 2012...
Fruits & Veggies

Are you getting your recommended daily allowance of drawing & painting (and stamping, collaging, coloring, thread-sketching)?  I have the perfect solution:  have more fruits and veggies!
The humble still life of produce is always a great source of inspiration for the artist, as is a single piece of fruit.
This is the perfect time of year to take your sketchbook and camera on a little field trip to the Farmer's Market for inspiration!

I would like to challenge you this month to create several drawings:

1) a single piece of fruit or a vegetable, or a grouping, as a still life.  Look at cast shadows and any highlights on the object.
Pears in a spalted wood bowl.  Take note of the THREE cast shadows
as well as the areas where they intersect.
These shadows are important:  they add depth as well as "anchor" the drawing
to the surface.

2)  Cut the same piece of fruit or the vegetable apart and draw it again, seeds or pit exposed.

3) a drawing from an element in a market-environment:  (examples:  a stack of produce in a farmer's market or the grocery store).

I can't wait to see where this takes everyone.  Consider more options, such as blind contour or modified contour drawings, drawing and then painting into it, drawings as a layer over a collage, drawing and carving stamps.

and also on watercolor paper.

There are endless possibilities.  Let's take this idea out for a stroll, shall we?
