July Theme: ELEMENT

(Lyric here) There are times when going back to the basics is the best thing to do,
when revisiting the fundamentals is called for.
Summer, for me, means a slower pace.
Paring things down to their essentials.

Therefore, the theme for July is

a part or aspect of something abstract, esp. one that is essential or characteristic
• a small but significant presence of a feeling or abstract quality • ( elements) the rudiments of a branch of knowledge • any of the four substances (earth, water, air, and fire) regarded as the fundamental constituents of the world in ancient and medieval philosophy.• one of these substances considered as a person's or animal's natural environment • ( the elements) the weather, esp. strong winds, heavy rain, and other kinds of bad weather
an essential element of the game component, constituent, part, section, portion, piece, segment, bit; aspect, factor, feature, facet, ingredientstrand, detail, point; member, unit, module, item.there is an element of truth in this stereotype trace, touch, hint, smatteringsoupçon.(elementsthe elements of political science basics, essentials, principlesfirst principles; foundations, fundamentals, rudiments; informal nuts and bolts, ABCs.(elementsI braved the elements weather, climate, meteorological conditions, atmospheric conditions; wind, rain, snow.

That's it. No further instructions - you are freely on your own!
Interpret the theme how you wish or you will.
(I'll pop in from time to time this month with bits and pieces about the basic elements of design)

How to be eligible for prize drawings:

In order to be eligible for one of the July prize packages you must post at least one photo of a sketchbook page related to the July theme to the Sketchbook Challenge Flickr group and you MUST tag one of your photos with the code "jul789".
It is not necessary to tag more than one and it will not increase your chances of winning.

Information on how to upload photos to flickr can be found

Winners will be chosen based on random draw on 7/31/11 and announced on the Sketchbook Challenge blog either on that day or on 8/1/11.

  1. Great theme, Lyric. Imagine the possibilities!

  2. Thanks, Lyric! Very nice description of the options for interpretation. Love it!

  3. I am a newbie to this and have a question. I understand the July theme and to use the code jul789 on a photo. But do I also have to post a photo of a page with June's theme? So to be involved for July I need to do 2 posts??? Just want to be clear. Thanks-I am excited to join in on this challenge.

  4. Janell that reference to June was a typo and should have said July. You only need to post a photo related to the July theme to be eligible for July prizes.

    Have fun with the theme!

  5. Loving it!!! This has SO many ways one can go with it!! A real challenge!!!!

  6. Very Excited about this theme. I blogged about it today many ways to interpret it. Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with.
